Introduction

The Abbey

The Abbey of Glastonbury founded in the seventh century is a truly atmospheric place steeped in history and legend including association with King Arthur and the Holy Grail. Before the dissolution in 1536-40, It was a rich and powerful monastery. However all that remains now of it's former glory are ruins set in 36 acres of parkland which are open to the public.

Glastonbury Abbey is a truly peaceful place, another sanctuary in this ancient market town from the hectic pace of modern life.

Glastonbury Abbey was traditionally the first Christian Sanctuary in Great Britain, Associated with Joseph of Arimathea and Saints David and Patrick.

In the grounds of the Abbey there is a descendent of the Holy Thorn tree, a graft from the original tree which legend says that Joseph of Arimathæa brought with him from the Holy Land and which sprouted from his staff

A grave discovered in the 12th century was purported to be the grave of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere.

Grave of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere

The site indicated by the second marker in the far distance is the place where it is purported that King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere were buried. In the year 1191 it is claimed that monks having received information from visions and from manuscripts in their library discovered the graves, inside which contained the remains of a man and a woman.

The grave was 16 feet down and, according to Giraldus a twelfth century chronicler,  underneath the covering stone was a leaden cross upon which was written:Hic jacet sepultus inclitus rex Arthurus in insula Avalonia ("Here lies interred the famous King Arthur on the Isle of Avalon")

The Town

Overlooked by Glastonbury Tor, an important sacred hill, Glastonbury in Somerset is a colourful town of rich traditions attracting visitors from all over the world and from all walks of life, cultures and traditions. Glastonbury was once an island, the isle of Avalon. It has been a place of pilgrimage for thousands of years and has been considered as sacred since Megalithic times 4-5,000 years ago. Here there are associations with Joseph of Arimathæa, King Arthur and it is home to the ancient Goddess whose veneration is much in evidence. It is of course of importance not only to Christianity and the Glastonbury goddess but also to a plethora of New Age beliefs and a multi-faith centre, a place of spiritual significance world-wide. It is, as already mentioned, thought that Jesus visited here.

For many however it is simply like any other town and there are some locals who resent the influence of those of the alternative and New-Age persuasion. Most certainly they appear to have at the very least dominated shopping here and in the town centre you will find a fascinating array of New-Age and alternative shops selling a wide range of esoteric, religious and cultural paraphernalia including books, crystals, herbs and incense. You will find a shop selling items of interest to Tibetan Buddhists, stores crammed with goods from India and a very curious looking shop selling statues of the Goddess along with candles and incense. There are places of healing such as the National Federation of Spiritual Healers to name just one. Also cafe's specialising in vegetarian food such as the ever popular Blue Note and much much more. You will even find the Goddess temple tucked away in the Court Yard off of the High Street

Glastonbury is also host to the now world famous Glastonbury music festival. Indeed it is a special place to many people and visitors flock here every year. This town and its environs has a special feel to it, an atmosphere all of its own, a special but intangible something.

High Street Glastonbury

The photo opposite shows the lower end of Glastonbury High Street as it meets with Magdalene Street. In the photograph you can see the entrance to the "Glastonbury Experience" a court yard with an interesting variety of New Age and alternative shops and other establishments of interest to those of the aforementioned persuasion, among them the Goddess temple and Star Child, Also the rear entrance to the blue note cafe serving exclusively good and cheap vegetarian and vegan food.  Also you can see the second hand book shop, Court Yard Books, selling new and used books on New Age, esoteric, religious and other subjects.

Star Child

A fascinating shop in the court yard and as one customer remarked, "its looks rather like a scene from Harry Potter".

Here you will find Goddess and other statuary, books, candles, incense, herbs aroma therapy oils and much more.

The Blue Note Cafe

A popular venue for a good range of vegetarian and vegan meals. Seats also in the court yard. A great atmosphere.

When this photograph was taken it was nearly closing time and rather empty. During the day it is however full of people and lively music, usually Jazz.

Glastonbury Town Centre

Cafe's and pubs are numerous in Glastonbury and on a fine day people sit out to enjoy the sunshine. In the distance you can see the tower of St John's church. Also of interest is the George and Pilgrim hotel founded in the 14th century as an inn for pilgrims.
